“Earlier when there not much development taking place, the people of the region planned things according to the region’s climate and environment but now these things are not considered. Earlier we used to get heavy snowfall and locals then used this water for agricultural and household activities but due to the rapid pace of development snowfall levels have really gone down and the day is not far when these Himalayan communities will be the first ones to suffer.
We are now exposed to other cultures and traditions. Our children go outside the state for higher studies in the absence of institutions of learning here and they get into habits like smoking, drinking and even start calling us Mom and Dad instead of using the local language. I would not like my children to follow the same trend.
I have seen some major changes like the development of roads, transport system, increase in food production, and access to education which was limited to only a few areas and to a few people. Development without basic infrastructure is not possible so availability of electricity, information and communication technologies, and water is a must. I would like to see these changes here. Modern technology is very important for the development of this region as it not only makes work easier, it also saves time and increases the efficiency of labour. Technology also helps minimize the gap in information and communication.” |
