The National Film Archive of India plays a major role in tracing, acquiring and preservation of the heritage of the Indian cinema, classification and documentation of data, and undertaking of research on films and acting as a hub or centre of dissemination of film culture. NFAI acquires and preserves classic films (both Indian and foreign), and also books, journals and other ancillary materials related to cinema, conducts long and short-term courses on film appreciation, screening of relevant programs, supports film training institutions by providing films and faculty and promotes research on Indian cinema.
