People's Science Institute (PSI) is a non-profit research and development organization. A group of professionals established PSI in 1988. Its mission is, ‘to help eradicate poverty through the empowerment of the poor and the productive, sustainable and equitable use of available human and natural resources’. It provides technical and managerial support to communities and organizations that work with the target groups, implements developmental programmes and undertakes public interest research.
PSI’s activities are spread all over India. Its geographical focus however, is primarily on the Central and Western Himalayan region in the mountain states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Its operational headquarter is located in Dehra Dun, Uttarakhand. The institute is known in India's voluntary sector for its pioneering work in the fields of community-led watershed development, environmental quality monitoring and disaster-safe housing. |
