Research, Advocacy, and Communication in Himalayan Areas (RACHNA)

Sector: Natural Resource Management

Area of Work: Uttarakhand - India

Research, Advocacy and Communication in Himalayan Areas (RACHNA) began in 1998 as a special program. It was meant to address research and policy analysis support required by Uttarakhand when it emerged as a new Himalayan state of India. It was created as a platform supported by Shri Bhuvneshwari Mahila Ashram (SBMA), Mac-Arthur Foundation, Plan International and Canadian International Development Agency and was institutionalized as an independent organization in 2004.

RACHNA is a mission based independent and entrepreneurial nonprofit organization that provides practical training, conducts cutting-edge social research, and advocates for enabling policy for ecosystem conservation in the Himalayas. It functions as a growing Green Business School for the Himalayas. RACHNA has carried out several action-research projects for the central Himalayas on status of women’s health, community based forest management, challenges of the Panchayati Raj institutions, and issues of urban governance.
