Ministry of Agriculture

Description/Purpose:

The scheme was launched in April 2005 and is valid up to 14th January 2011 and provides assistance to States to supplement their efforts in feed and fodder development sector. It provides assistance to fodder block making units; grassland development  (including grass reserves); fodder seed production & distribution; biotechnology research projects. Under this initiative only drought affected/rain deficient areas of the States are eligible.

Particulars:

For fodder block making units the grant by central government is provided at 25% of the cost or Rs. 21.25 lacs, whichever is lower. With the help of grassland development reserves, the degraded grasslands will be slowly improved and the erosion will be minimized. The biomass produced will help to minimize the gap between availability and requirement of fodder. For fodder seed production and distribution, the Central government will provide 75% of subsidy and the State government will provide 25%; this is mainly to encourage fodder cultivation by multiplication and distribution of seeds. The biotechnology research project will take up studies for developing suitable fodder varieties and to improve the utilization of feed and fodder by enrichment of rumen microbial ecosystem etc.
