  STEP (Support to Training and Employment Programme) scheme

Description/Purpose:

The scheme aims at helping women in traditional sectors through skill enhancement programmes, thereby facilitating their employment.

 
Particulars:

Under the scheme, government offers training and then provides employment to target women on a project basis. The same is done by first mobilizing the target women in viable groups. Then they are helped to enhance their skills, support services are arranged for them, they are endowed with appropriate awareness and gender sensitization, and they are enabled to have access to credit.

The end objective of the scheme is to enable concerned women to take up employment-cum-income generation programmes of their own, thereby helping them to raise their socio-economic status.

The target women are helped to upgrade their skills through measures like training, backward and forward linkages, etc.

The scheme is implemented through NGOs and other voluntary organizations, co-operatives, Federations, District Rural Development Agencies, Public Sector Organizations.

 
Beneficiaries:
The target beneficiaries include marginalized rural women and urban poor, such as wage labourers, migrant labourers, unpaid daily workers, tribal and other dispossessed groups.
