The Department is engaged in genetic transformation of local non-descript cattle population through cross breeding or up gradation programme with exotic dairy breeds. The methods adopted for such up gradation include Artificial Insemination by the use of Frozen Semen and natural service by pedigree bulls. 684 Veterinary Institutions, which include 596 Artificial Insemination Centers using Frozen Semen Technology, are carrying out the genetic up gradation activity of cattle. The Frozen Semen Technology has been extended to District Leh and Kargil also during the year 2001-2002 with the opening of 13 centers in District Leh and 16 centers in District Kargil. To provide these institutions the basic input for Artificial Insemination Programme, the Department has established a Frozen Semen Project at Ranbirbagh, which houses the pure bred bulls of Jersey and Holstein Friesian breeds of cattle. The Frozen Semen Processing Laboratory, Ranbirbagh is assisted by 6 functional liquid nitrogen plants at Budgam, Baramulla, Anantnagh, Handwara, Pulwama and Kargil which meet the entire requirement of liquid nitrogen for frozen semen field centers.
