  Equine/Yak/Camel Development Programme

Description/Purpose:

These Pack Animals constitute the most important means of transportation of men and material in the hilly areas of the Division, especially Ladakh region, where mechanical transportation by motor vehicles is virtually impossible.  Animals like Yak, Zanskari horse, Double Humped Camel, are not only the pride of Ladakh but are invaluable virtual treasurers of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. This Scheme is used in preserving these rare species of animals, which otherwise are heading for extinction especially the double-humped camel, yak and Equine in Nubra Valley and Zanskari horse in Zanskar. The Primary objectives of these breeding farms of Ladakh region are the conservation, propagation and development of these animals. All the Funds Required is provided by the Directorate of Animal Husbandry Kashmir along with assistance of Central Government. The development and preservation of Zanskari Horse and Double Humped Camel have been taken up in a big way with the assistance of Government of India, under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Conversation of Threatened Breeds”.

 
Particulars:

The Department has established Five (5) Breeding Farms in  Ladakh Region Yak Breeding Farms at Bodhkharboo (District Kargil) and Nobra (District Leh) , Zanskari  Equine Breeding Farms at Chuchoot (District Leh) and Zanskar (District Kargil)and Double Humped Camel Farm at Chuchoot (District Leh), with the prime objective of preserving and producing good quality breeding animals for distribution to the various field institutions under breed improvement and development programme. Zanskari Equine Breeding Farm, Zanskar has started functioning in the year 2001-02 with the introduction of four mares and one stallion. The Department has submitted a proposal to Government of India for Strengthening of the Yak Breeding Farms, Bodhkharboo and Diskit under the CSS “National Project for Cattle and Buffalo Breeding (NPCBB)”.
