Reach out to organizations/initiatives working in the Himalayan region and for Himalayan people. Organisations working in diverse sectors, at the country level or internationally. Websites and portals that develop wider awareness on the region.
Mountain regions are disadvantaged in terms of development opportunities and options. The remoteness and harsh conditions, the environment fragility, the geographic spread, low population concentration, and the unique but closed cultures, severely limit the reach and effectiveness of development in these regions.
The Himalayan region remains among the least addressed regions in the world, singularly deprived of development and research attention. In any poorly developed region, civil society forms an effective bridge between administrators and the local populace, an effective community institutional framework and NGO network leads to benefit the vulnerable sections of society. But the civil society in the Himalayan region is rudimentary and not particularly effective. Existing civil society organisations in the region face severe challenges - some, internal to the organisations/institutions and their capability, some to do with programme design and implementation, and some to do with the socio-political-environmental context.
A few organisations are however, carrying out commendable work in the region, seeking to help the people of the region achieve sustainable development. Some of these organisations are local, while others are national, regional and international in their scope and scale of operations. Some of these are specific in their target area, while others address the Himalayan region alongside other regions. Interventions range from research, advocacy and grassroots projects, and cover a range of sectors, including livelihoods, conservation and welfare among others. |
