  Weather-based Crop Insurance Scheme

Description/Purpose:

The scheme aims at taking care of every crop covered by the scheme in case it gets destroyed due to temperature-related factors, such as untimely rains and relative humidity. But crops destroyed by hail or diseases will not be taken care of.

 
Particulars:

As of now, the scheme covers five horticulture crops – apple (in hilly areas of Dehradun, Nainital, Chamoli, Pauri, Pithoragarh), mango (Udham Singh Nagar district, Nainital district, Tehri district, Pauri district, Haridwar district), litchi (Udham Singh Nagar district, Nainital district, Haridwar district), potato (Dehradun district, Nainital district, Udham Singh Nagar district, Nainital district), tomato (Dehradun district, Nainital district, Udham Singh Nagar district, Nainital district.

The farmer concerned is supposed to bear 6 per cent of the premium. The state and the central government is supposed to bear 3 per cent each, i.e. 6 per cent in total.

Potato enjoys an insurance of Rs. 50,000 per hectare. The insurance cover of apple depends of the tree. The insurance cover for an apple tree in the age group of 5 to 15 years is Rs. 500, while the insurance cover for an apple tree between 16 to 40 years of age is Rs. 1,000.

 
Beneficiaries:
The farmers who are into cultivation and production of the insured crops.
