Description/Purpose:

The scheme was launched with an objective to facilitate the social and economic empowerment of poor rural women through formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs). Earlier known as ‘Indira Mahila Yojana’ – the Centrally Sponsored Scheme was launched in 1996-97, recast and renamed – “Swayamsidha” during 2000-01.

The scheme which earlier benefitted only the southern district of Sikkim, now includes 4 additional blocks for its area of operation The following persons can be contacted to avail the scheme:

1. Village Level - Anganwadi Worker
2. Circle Level - Supervisor
3. Block Level - Child Development Project Officer
4. District Level - Programme Officer
Through this scheme, the women are encouraged to form groups according to their social economic status and felt needs. Association of Govt and Panchayat Officials/office bearers play the role of facilitators. The scheme strives to promote:
- Thrift and saving; linkage with Banks
- Income generating activities
- Convergence of inter- sectoral services
- Sustained process of awareness generation & education.
 
Beneficiaries:
Rural women of Sikkim.
 
Eligibility criteria:

Self Help Groups of women.
